Under the clouds – Living in an airplane

Anyone who finds hotels too expensive and impersonal will be happy to use Airbnb in foreign countries and cities. Airbnb is a platform offering private rooms, apartments and even entire houses for temporary (and at times shared) accommodation. Currently, the platform features a special offer: an airplane.

The only difference is that potential guests do not simply rent the accommodation. Rather, they can stay there for free – if they write a convincing application, in English, in 100 words or less.
Those chosen are then entitled to occupy the unique “apartment,” an airplane converted by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The plane accommodates four people, has two bedrooms and more than eight (!) bathrooms. Extras include wi-fi, a toaster, a coffee machine, first-class seats, a gaming console and a huge, panoramic cockpit window. The plane is conveniently located directly at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.
The house rules are quite strict:
  • Flying is prohibited.
  • Using the inflatable emergency slides is prohibited.
  • Smoking is prohibited when the no-smoking signs are lit.
  • Roasting marshmallows on the motors is prohibited.
  • Alcohol consumption is prohibited.
  • Please water the plants and feed the fish.

One last request for overnight guests: “Please treat our plane as you would your own.” In any case, it is a good joke.
